When and how do I need to get a Building Permit? Almost all home improvements require a building permit. Please see the Home Owners Guide at this site or contact the Building Department at 440-516-300 for information on permits. Please do not start any work on your property until a permit is secured. Can the City recommend a contractor? No the city cannot recommend any contractors. We do, however, supply our residents with a list of registered contractors. Registered means that a contractor has proven to the city that they have business insurance and have posted a bond in the amount of $15,000. Please get at least 3 written estimates. Then call the Building Department at 440-516-3000 to find out if your chosen contractor has any complaints filed against them.
